A guide to Maenam village on Koh Samui — six villas (KW³ Garden, KW³ Pavilion, KW Villa, KW2, Green Lotus, Lazy) anchored two to ten minutes flat walk from the bay, a shallow shelf that suits toddlers, and an honest read on when Maenam is the right answer versus when Bangpor on the hill is.
Maenam is the flat, walkable north-coast village on Koh Samui — home to six of our nine villa residences, including the eight-villa KW³ compound two minutes on foot from the sand. The bay faces west-southwest with a long shallow shelf — waist-deep ~30 metres out at low tide, no rip current — which is why families travelling with toddlers and grandparents in the same booking most often choose Maenam. Airport ~25 minutes by car. Below — what Maenam is, which of our six villas suits which kind of week, and when Bangpor up the hill is the better answer instead.
Maenam is the village immediately west of Bophut on Koh Samui's north coast — residential, low-rise, and flat. The road behind the beach is the same road our team uses to roll a suitcase from the compound gate to the sand. The bay is long, west-southwest facing, and gentle. This is the part of Koh Samui that has not been remade for nightlife — a village strip with restaurants, two pharmacies, a fresh-produce market and a school, then a tail of residential lanes spurring north towards the water.
It is the opposite of Chaweng. Chaweng faces the open Gulf of Thailand on the east coast and takes the prevailing easterly swell on the chin; Maenam, angled away from that swell, is gentle by orientation. The surf at Chaweng can be rough enough that toddlers cannot stand in it. At Maenam, in front of our KW³ frontage, the shelf stays shallow ~30 metres out with no rip current.
It is also not Bangpor. Bangpor is the residential hillside immediately west of Maenam — single-villa plots set into the slope above a separately-named Bangpor Beach. Maenam is the flat coastal village. Both are 30 minutes from the airport, but the experience differs materially. All nine of our villa residences sit in one of these two north-coast neighbourhoods — six in Maenam, three in Bangpor. The choice between them is the first decision most guests make.
All six are Maenam residences, differing in size, bedroom count, walk distance to the beach, and architectural intent. The KW³ compound is a special case: eight three-bedroom villas around a single private lane, bookable individually or together for groups up to 48.
A modernist three-bedroom residence within our private KW³ compound on 680sqm of garden, pool and pavilion. Two minutes on foot to Maenam Beach — entirely flat, no hill, suitcases roll. Three en-suite bedrooms, 1.35m flat-bottom pool, single-storey, step-free. Three units inside the compound (#1, #2, #8). Best for: families of up to 6 wanting the shortest walk to the sand; grandparents who need step-free everything; first-time visitors who'd rather not hire a car.
The larger KW³ floorplan — 780sqm of garden, pool, pavilion and outdoor dining. Same compound, same two-minute flat walk, more room to breathe. Three en-suite bedrooms, a generous living pavilion, a covered outdoor sala. Five units inside the compound (#3, #4, #5, #6, #7). Best for: parties of 6 wanting a larger plot than Garden; couples-with-kids wanting outdoor dining space; family groups booking two adjacent villas for a 12-guest party.
The first villa we built — the one that defined what KW would become. A 500sqm plot in a tropical garden of frangipani, palm and lotus. A pavilion of glass and timber opens onto a 12-metre lap pool. Four en-suite bedrooms, single-storey, all on the main floor with step-free access to the pool. ~5-minute flat walk to Maenam Beach. Best for: families of 8 wanting a single-storey villa closer to the village strip than the sand; grandparents who'd rather walk through frangipani than alongside a beach road.
Our most generous Maenam residence — four suites across a single horizontal floorplan on a 1,000sqm plot with a 14-metre infinity pool and a lily pond at its heart. Polished concrete, retractable glass walls, a pavilion kitchen that opens to the pool deck. Single-storey, step-free, ~7-minute flat walk to Maenam Beach. Bicycles provided. Best for: families of 8 prioritising garden over walk distance; intimate weddings of up to 30 guests; multigenerational stays where grandparents want a horizontal floorplan and older children want a real pool.
Five en-suites on a 650sqm plot — our only 5-bedroom residence and largest by sleep capacity (up to 10). A long lap pool flanked by daybeds, a covered sala, and a kitchen built for resident chefs. A quiet residential lane in Maenam, ~10-minute flat walk to the beach, bicycles provided. Interiors pared back — white walls, dark timber, slow ceiling fans. Best for: family reunions of 10 in a single villa; three couples plus four children; two grandparents plus two families with kids — each adult pair gets a private en-suite.
Our flagship — the only Maenam villa where the headline is the view rather than the walk. Four suites across two storeys on a 1,000sqm plot, perched above the bay with an infinity pool that disappears into the horizon. Dark stone facades, floor-to-ceiling glass, interior finishes that took two years to source. Private gym, wine cellar, cinema room. Resident chef on request. Best for: a special-occasion week — milestone birthday, anniversary, a single-villa wedding for the immediate family — where the brief is “the best, full stop” rather than “closest to the beach”.
A practical note: KW2 is two-storey and elevated. Guests prioritising step-free access through the property should choose KW³ Garden (units #1, #2, #8), KW³ Pavilion (units #3, #4, #5), KW Villa or Green Lotus instead.
Each Maenam villa is individually bookable, but one is also a compound. KW³ is eight three-bedroom villas around a single private lane, two minutes' flat walk from the sand. When adjacent villas are booked by one party, the inner lane becomes private to that party. The natural answer to two briefs:
For parties of six or fewer without a need for a private lane, book one KW³ Garden or one KW³ Pavilion standalone — the two-minute walk to the beach is the same.
Both sit on the same north coast, both are ~30 minutes by car from Samui Airport, and the same on-call services — resident chef, butler, in-villa massage, nanny — are available across the portfolio. The question is what you want your week to feel like.
Going back and forth between the two? Message us with your dates and party and we will tell you which is the right answer — and see our guide to choosing a family villa on Koh Samui for the higher-level decision tree.
Worth saying plainly.
If, after the above, the answer is still Maenam — we will recommend the specific villa when you message us with your dates and party.
Where is Maenam on Koh Samui? Maenam is the flat coastal village on the north coast of Koh Samui, immediately west of Bophut and east of the Bangpor hillside. It is roughly 25–30 minutes by car from Samui International Airport. The bay faces west-southwest.
Is Maenam Beach safe for toddlers and weak swimmers? Yes. The bay in front of our KW³ frontage has a long shallow shelf — waist-deep ~30 metres out at low tide, no rip current. The west-southwest orientation shelters Maenam from the easterly swell that hits Chaweng, which is why families travelling with toddlers often choose Maenam over the east-coast beaches.
Which KW villa in Maenam is closest to the beach? KW³ Garden Residence and KW³ Pavilion Residence are both a 2-minute flat walk to Maenam Beach — paved the entire way, no hill, suitcases roll. KW Villa is 5 minutes, Green Lotus 7, Lazy Villa 10 with bicycles provided.
Can I book multiple Maenam villas for a family reunion? Yes. The KW³ compound is eight three-bedroom villas around a single private lane, bookable together for up to 48 guests. The inner lane becomes private to your party when adjacent villas are booked. Two villas sleep up to 12; three sleep up to 18; the full compound sleeps up to 48.
Tell us your dates, your group, and whether you're choosing for flat walk-to-beach, multigenerational ease, or a 12–48-guest reunion in the KW³ compound. We will recommend the specific Maenam villa — or whether Bangpor is actually the better fit.
